Unusual Yorkshire Terriers Fetch Premium Prices

Is the Yorkshire Terrier the Right Breed for Your Home?

Even though off-coloured Yorkshire Terriers are advertised at premium prices, being of an unusual or atypical colour is stated to be neither new nor unusual. In fact, a 1973 book on the breed discusses the atypical colours that sometimes occur, as well - but they are not preferred. The breed standard, as set by the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America, states that the dog should be a "blue and tan" - with black or dark steel blue and tan being the most desirable. But, even a "true" Yorkshire Terrier can come in shades of blue, and some may have some gold on their head or legs.

Is the Yorkshire Terrier the correct breed for your home? These dogs were originally bred to be ratters, but they have become popular companions. They are small, weighing in at an average of 4 to 6 pounds, and make good pets for families with children over the age of 6.

Yorkshire Terriers are affectionate and loyal, but they can also be stubborn and demanding. When socialized, they do well with other pets, but can be protective of their owners. They require regular grooming and exercise.
